CIA. NADINE GERSPACHER (GERMANY/SPAIN) | RE
About the piece
Krump is one of the most challenging disciplines that the dance world has offered us—a kind of Molotov cocktail of contemporary dance. NADINE GERSPACHER teamed up with specialist ARIAS FERNÁNDEZ for her new piece, RE. The encounter creates the greatest possible contrast between the nuanced and complex dance language of the dancer and choreographer, and this raw and explosive street dance style, which emerged in Los Angeles in the early 2000’s and sometimes recalls voodoo ceremonies and exorcisms. Together, in their duet, the two artists explore the various polarities of a society deeply divided by the Covid-19 crisis and the individuals living within it.
In her 2019–2021 trilogy, NADINE GERSPACHER already addressed current social issues and focused her pieces on the complex effects of digital technology on humans. Now, RE. presses the “RE-Set” button, which halts the pandemic upheaval and, through a sort of reconfiguration, offers the possibility of a new beginning.
About the company
Cia Nadine Gerspacher is an international project that serves as a creative platform for the company’s own productions, as well as collaborations with other artists and commissioned choreographic works for dance institutions and other companies, in addition to organizing the Nexo Festival in Freiburg, Germany. The company combines dance and theater in a poetic way. Nadine Gerspacher’s main field of work is dance-theater, inspired by everyday life. She creates small worlds inhabited by eccentric characters where absurdity, poetry, and raw physicality merge narratively. Humor, transformation, grotesque moments, and vulnerability are fundamental in her works. Fundamental questions of human existence—Who are we? What are we searching for? What is love?—are constantly re-examined in different ways.
Her pieces are multimedia, characterized by powerful dance and acrobatic elements. Overall, her creations have a clear aesthetic, high quality, and a strong essence. The works address socio-critical and current themes, bringing to life striking images with the power to emotionally connect with audiences, and captivate even the youngest or most inexperienced viewers. In addition to creating physical dance-theater, the company organizes dance training workshops and courses for both professional and amateur dancers.
The work of Cia Nadine Gerspacher has been consistently funded since 2018 by various institutions: E-werk Freiburg, Fonds für Darstellende Künste, Kulturamt Freiburg, Landesverband für Tanz Baden-Württemberg, Solo-Dis-Tanzen Program, Nationales Performance Netz, Neustart Kultur Initiative, Goethe Institut, Tanzland Kulturstiftung INTHEGA-Häuser 2023–2026, Roca Umbert – Fábrica de Creació Granollers, La Caldera Barcelona, Nunart Guinardó, and Zona Franca Barcelona.
