Miller de Nobili | “There was still time”
About the piece
Humankind has always felt the need to invent narratives and stories to fill the void of nothingness. Today, more than ever, people are trying and failing to make sense of the absurdity of their existence. Depression, alienation and fragmentation are flip sides of hyper-accelerated self-enhancement and excessive individualism. Miller de Nobili takes inspiration from Beckett’s Waiting for Godot to explore its possible reiterations in the context of modern society. Maybe Beckett’s character Estragon is right to assume that, when we see only darkness, we are not blind but looking into the future. But could we equally use this emptiness to pause and reflect together with the ones next to us? ‘There was still time’ explores how dance transmits ideas of suspense and absence. Can the disruptive power of waiting offer a moment to breathe in a world that rushes us through ever-changing types of empty content at an incredibly fast pace?
About the company
Miller de Nobili was created during the lockdown of 2020, as an artistic collaboration between Maria Chiara de’ Nobili and Alexander Miller. Connected by a shared vision, they set out to develop a platform that seamlessly integrated their joint passions for breaking, contemporary dance and urban theater, along with performance techniques. Their first collaboration, “Momento,” won the prestigious Ballet Scapino Production Award at the 35th Choreography Competition in Hannover. Driven by their dedication to innovation, virtuosity and careful attention to detail, Miller de Nobili steadily gained recognition and success through a series of captivating creations. Their full-length work “PACK” premiered in September 2021 as part of the “Dancing About” festival as a co-production with Tanzpakt Dresden at Hellerau, the European Arts Centre. Following its successful debut, “PACK” was presented at the Tanzplattform Deutschland 2022. In 2022, Miller de Nobili produced “Clouds for tomorrow,“ which premiered at PACT Zollverein as part of ATELIER No. 66. The work was invited to be presented at the Tanzplattform Bern, the Tanz Labor Ulm and the 36th International Choreography Competition in Hannover. In the same year, MdN produced two original short creations: “Stay,“ produced by SILK Fluegge (Austria) and Pottporus e.V., as well as “up the slippery slope” for Think Big 2022, with the support of the Staatsballett Hannover. In November 2022, MdN premiered its latest full-length production “Don’t you dare!” co-produced by Hellerau – European Centre for the Arts and supported by Residenzzentrumtanz+. In 2023, MdN was selected to receive 3-year conceptual funding from the City of Dresden. They also participated in the Rotterdam International Choreography Competition (RIDCC) with their latest short creation, “Until Again.” That same year, MdN choreographed a new creation titled “Song of the Dark Forest” for Rotterdam’s Ballet Scapino. The upcoming full-length creation in 2024 will be developed through a series of artistic development residencies spread throughout the year in collaboration with international institutions such as AGORA de Montpellier Danse in France, Teatros del Canal in Madrid, Spain, and Residenzzentrum Tanz+ in Baden, Switzerland. These multiple residencies will provide resources and opportunities for continued growth and refinement of the project. In July 2024, Miller de Nobili will premiere the full-length work “There was still time” at the Biennale di Venezia commissioned by director Wayne McGregor.
